Numerous voices, reasonable ones, warned the African Union against choosing President Evariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi as AU Heads of State Chairperson. Most deemed him too simple an individual for the complexities of representing Africa as a continent.
And now after only a couple months Ndayishimiye aka Gen. Neva has decided to nominate former Senegalese President Macky Sall as the “African Union candidate” for the UN Secretary General position. What! But no one was informed! There was no procedure.
And so, 20 African countries, including Senegal, immediately protested and rejected the nomination as a “Burundian government affair.” Apparently Gen. Neva thought he was presiding over a CNDD-FDD function!
The embarrassment is palpable. Those who warned AU can only utter the proverbial “I told you so” line. “Evariste Ndayishimiye is very limited (intellectually), and he was bound to confuse a ceremonial role to his dictatorial rule in Burundi,” a parliamentary member in Bujumbura that asked not to be named remarked as he laughed out loud at the diplomatic incident caused by the Ndayishimiye regime.
Notably, it is also whispered that Ndayishimiye received hard cash in exchange for his support of Macky Sall. But at this point we cannot fully establish this.
Now however, in the insuing confusion within the AU caused by Ndayishimiye aka Gen. Neva, the AU Commission had issued a statement in which member countries (including Senegal) protested. It’s clear that Ndayishimiye overstepped his authority.
Unfortunately, the continent suffered embarrassment on the world stage: a direct result of a completely incapable person getting the turn to head the AU.
On social media many are remarking “Ndayishimiye has shown total incompetence in running Burundi. Imagine he thought he could run the AU like he does Burundi.”
The debacle comes as AU financial services also sounded an alarm about the Burundian dictator. In his recent trip to Colombia, Ndayishimiye rented a jet (Burundi has no plane), travelled with his wife and some of his kids, and shamelessly forwarded the entire bill to the African Union – all without prior discussion or agreement!
So AU has a confused and corrupt Chair of Head of State Council.
In short, the African Union should brace for impact.
