The recent Declaration of Principles signed by Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo under the auspices of the United States has delivered a crushing blow to the regime of Felix Tshisekedi in Kinshasa. A regime that has relentlessly worked to undermine Rwanda at every turn.
When Tshisekedi proposed a minerals-for-security deal to the Trump administration, he naively assumed that Washington would automatically side with his ambitions, giving him a free hand to escalate hostilities against Rwanda. However, Donald Trump, no fool like the taximan from Luba, responded by dispatching senior advisor Massad Boulos to rigorously assess the realities on the ground and chart a comprehensive understanding of the DRC’s deep-seated crisis.
Now, Tshisekedi finds himself cornered. Within less than a week, his regime must produce a credible blueprint for the repatriation of Congolese refugees who have languished for decades in Rwandan camps, addressing the very root causes that drove them to flee their homeland in the first place.
Moreover, under the Declaration of Principles, Tshisekedi is compelled to immediately cease all support for the genocidal forces of the FDLR and the thuggish militias of Wazalendo. The agreement explicitly demands that the Tshisekedi regime”refrain from providing state military support to non-state armed groups,” leaving no room for the regime’s previous duplicity.
Beyond these urgent measures, Tshisekedi must now move to fully restore diplomatic and cooperative ties with Rwanda. This is a necessary step to revive the regional integration framework critical for Central Africa’s future.
Tshisekedi’s belligerent ambitions have been thoroughly shattered. Stripped of his reckless illusions, he has been dragged back to the basics, forced to confront the very foundations of governance, diplomacy, and peace that he had so brazenly ignored.
