Highly unpopular, Burundi’s Gen. Neva forced to free political rival

After incarcerating his former prime minister for close to three years, Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye aka Gen. Neva suddenly has changed course.

Alain Guillaume Bunyoni –the former Prime Minister– sentenced to life imprisonment and hit with an illegal seizure of all his goods, has suddenly been released on bail, officially for health reasons. In reality however, this is another sign that power is slipping out of the hands of Gen. Neva. He is long control in Gitega! Which is why he had no choice but to release Bunyoni.

Jailed for an alleged attempted coup, Bunyoni was tortured in the most brutal ways. Ndayishimiye wanted his former Prime Minister to confess to the imaginary coup d’état, but lacked evidence.

The trial, held behind closed doors, ended up as a complete farce with a self-proclaimed witch-doctor Zz”confessing”, “Bunyoni asked me to cast a spell on Ndayishimiye. He wanted me to use the same spell I used against Nkurunziza (the former president that mysteriously “died of a heart attack.”

The the witchdoctor’s “testimony” was deemed sufficient by the court to convict Bunyoni to life imprisonment.

So far, Bunyoni was held in solitary confinement without any contact with anyone but his wife, his daughter, and his lawyer. All three visitors were also subjected to mandatory strip searches before and after the visit.

Fellow prisoners reported a mental break down of the former Prime Minister. He spent his nights screaming “Don’t touch me” or singing gospel songs. His health deteriorated severely with the prolonged solitary confinement and bizzare diet (only fruits) fearful of being poisoned. Ndayishimiye justified all this by telling his cronies that Bunyoni had tried to take over the country and also blamed him for the economic shambles Burundi finds itself in. Ndayishimiye claimed that fuel shortages, the lack foreign currency in the country and all other ills, were part of Bunyoni’s sabotage to make it easier for him to take over Burundi.

Ndayishimiye’s lame excuses did not file with his political party; four years after, the situation worsened. The Burundian dictator began to plot against his party leadership, he wanted to scapegoat the current Secretary General of the party. He equally wanted to blame his army chief of staff for the constant defeat in Congo. Unsurprisingly, the Burundian ruling party elite was not willing to suffer Bunyoni’s health or wait for Ndayishimiye’s cheap scapegoating tactics. They reacts by leaking scandals surrounding the first lady’s grand corruption schemes and her numerous infidelities with her security details.

Ndayishimiye was also threatened by Tanzanian officials close to Bunyoni in the recently concluded EAC Heads of States Summit. “Release Bunyoni or else face a total embargo…”, they told him.

Gen.Neva was snookered internally and externally, he had no choice but to release Bunyoni.

However, the Burundian president is not yet done. Sources indicate that he has now opted to poison Bunyoni (something that might already be done). “Bunyoni will either go crazy or die soon,” our reliable source speculated, adding “then Bunyoni will no longer be a threat!”
