Peace has always been elusive in the Great Lakes Region of Africa, more markedly so in former colonies of the Belgian kingdom. It was not by accident, it was by design and in line with a horrid colonial and neo-colonial policy.
Fundamentally, Belgium figured out that it was in its interest to keep the region as chaotic as possible in order to exploit valuable mineral deposits it discovered in the colonies.
From the late nineteenth century, the tiny, almost irrelevant European Kingdom, imposed the most brutal extractive colonial rule in DR Congo. They had all sorts of hard labour quotas that native Congolese had to meet, to avoid the most cruel and unusual punishment imaginable.
Public floggings of naked adults, rape, amputation and mutilation were all on the menu for failing to harvest the set quota of rubber, gold, or even chicken eggs. With independence, Belgium’s rulers opted to continue their extractive policies indirectly via brutal proxy agents such as Mobutu, Habyarimana and, today, Felix Tshisekedi together with Evariste Ndayishimiye aka Gen. Neva.
The goal was simple: keep the region in perpetual conflict while pretending to be the sole expert of the Great Lakes Region. Why else would they consistently back the most corrupt, most brutal dictatorships while sabotaging, assassinating renaissance leaders marking strides in peace and development? Unapologetically, they have been arming and training killers, sending mercenaries and causing wars. Shamelessly, they now actively participate in attacking and bombing Banyamulenges in an effort to derail all peaceful conflict resolutions for the current crisis in Congo.
Unless Qatar and the US both decided to permanently block Belgium’s interference, Congo will not know peace. While others call for peace, Belgium deploys attack drones and mercenaries in conjunction with their puppet pets Tshisekedi and Ndayishimiye, Belgium. They want war, chaos and destruction, to keep facilitating their extracive policies.
