The Oslo Freedom Forum’s dangerous embrace of genocide denialism

The Oslo Freedom Forum (OFF), once regarded by some as a reputable platform for human rights advocacy, continues to erode its own credibility by giving a podium to figures like Canadian so-called “journalist”, a vile genocide denier called Judi Rever that spends her days distorting the facts of the 94 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

In her latest appearance, Rever peddled her tired conspiracy theories and falsehoods, rehashing debunked claims and pushing a narrative that sympathizes with the perpetrators of the 1994 Genocide.

Her “presentation” was more about personal vendettas and revisionist history (wrapped in the cloak of so-called activism) than anything else.

By giving Rever a microphone, the OFF has shown once again that it is not truly committed to objective freedom or justice. Rather, it has become a selective platform that elevates fringe voices determined to undermine the sovereignty and progress of African nations particularly Rwanda

Rever’s presentation targeted President Kagame with baseless accusations, painting Rwanda as a regional villain while ignoring the deeply rooted truth about the country’s post-genocide recovery and development. She also repeated long-dismissed allegations about Rwanda’s involvement in the Democratic Republic of Congo, intentionally deflecting attention from ongoing abuses and illegal mineral extraction by Western companies many from her home country, Canada.

One striking example is the case of Ivanhoe Mines, a Canadian company accused of collusion with the Congolese military in human rights abuses, including summary executions, rape, and looting in Kilwa. Rever conveniently omits such atrocities in her narrative, choosing instead to fixate on Rwanda with smears such as that it’s the “apex predator” of the region.

The Oslo Freedom Forum claims to champion human rights, yet it has repeatedly given a voice to those who defend or romanticize genocidaires and their enablers. Instead of inviting credible Rwandan voices who can share the nation’s journey, struggles, and progress, they provide airtime to those who thrive on slandering a nation rising from the ashes of genocide.

It’s troubling that an event they claim was “hosted a global beacon of liberty” can devolve into a closed echo chamber of debunked theories, and deranged distortions of history.
