Since last Saturday Rwanda has continued to receive its citizens that had been held hostage for years by the genocidal, terrorist FDLR. They weren’t the only ones.
To date, more than 796 Rwandans have returned home after being exploited by the FDLR to justify its continued presence in eastern DRC.
FDLR has consistently used these Rwandan civilians as human shields and propaganda tools, manipulating their presence to sustain an extremist ideology rooted in genocide denialism. Also, the militia has been recruiting among these hostages, turning some into terrorists themselves.
Their repatriation has taken place in coordination with UNHCR.
Still, several Congolese propagandists alongside foreign-based genocide fugitives and their Europe-based offspring have been actively spreading the lie that “these returns are forced.”
Nothing could be further from the truth.
First of all the Tshisekedi regime in Kinshasa has consistently denied FDLR’s presence on its soil, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Now, this mass repatriation serves as yet another undeniable proof that the FDLR remains active, continues to hold hostages, and spreads violence in the region.
It also raises serious questions about MONUSCO, the UN’s peacekeeping mission in DRC. Despite a presence of nearly three decades and a multi-billion dollar budget, MONUSCO has failed to dismantle the FDLR or liberate these civilians. Instead, the very force meant to protect them stood by as they were held hostage for years.
These repatriated Rwandans, now safely back home, are not returning as refugees; they are freed hostages. The government has assured that each individual will be given identity documents, access to education for children, and vocational training for adults. They are now being provided the tools and opportunities they were denied for years.
Their return sends a clear message to the world: the FDLR is not a dormant threat it remains a terrorist militia bent on destabilizing the region, with sympathizers actively working to distort the truth.
While international bodies with vast resources have failed, AFC/M23 movement despite operating without fanfare or international funds has repeatedly demonstrated effectiveness in exposing the deep dysfunction at the heart of the conflict.
The suffering of hundreds has now come to light, as Rwanda embraces its returning citizens with dignity and hope.
The international community must recognize this as a moment not just of repatriation, but of truth and accountability.
