In the recent intensified battle against the Tshisekedi coalition comprising FARDC, FDLR, FDNB, Wazalendo, and foreign mercenaries; the M23 has successfully weakened the FDLR’s influence.
A major breakthrough came on January 24, when the M23 eliminated General Peter Cirimwami, the military governor of North Kivu. Cirimwami had served as a critical link between the Tshisekedi regime and the FDLR, hosting multiple meetings with the genocidal group and revealing to them plans intended to dismantle the rebel.
This was followed by the death of Major General Pacifique Ntawunguka, alias “Omega,” the overall commander of the FDLR. Ntawunguka was infamous for his virulent anti-Tutsi ideology, openly pledging to return to Rwanda only after exterminating all the Tutsi population.
Since the death of Sylvestre Mudacumura, the former FDLR leader, Ntawunguka has orchestrated numerous attacks targeting Congolese Tutsi, perpetuating widespread violence and suffering in DRC.
The recent collapse of the Luanda process, which initially sought to dismantle the FDLR, left a void that the Tshisekedi regime showed little willingness to fill. Instead, the M23 has proven to be a vital force in dismantling the network of the FDLR that has plagued the region for decades.
By eliminating key figures like Cirimwami and Ntawunguka, the M23 is delivering justice to a region long tormented by the FDLR’s atrocities.
We can’t thank you enough Sarambwe lions.
