The Burundian economy has collapsed under the rule of Evariste Ndayishimiye aka Gen. Neva, and his highly corrupt cabal.
Gen. Neva initially blamed his former prime minister Alain Bunyoni for every wrong, and subsequently sacked him. The ruler then threw Bunyoni in jail, in April 2023. Yet today, Burundi is much worse than before.
There is next to no fuel, in the entire country!
There is next to no foriegn currency in the central bank!
Hyperinflation is hitting Burundi, already the poorest country on earth, hard.
Is Bunyoni to blame for all that?
To add insult to injury, Burundians have to watch Gen. Neva’s wife and children wastefully flouting massive amounts of money (no doubt the proceeds of looting the poor treasury), while masses starve.
Ironically, some of the wealth they flout happens to be what they confiscated from Bunyoni. Yes, Bunyoni himself was another big DD goon, therefore it’s a case of crooks fighting other crooks for wealth (and power) while the country sinks further into destitution.
“It’s a new system Neva found. He calls it agapapu”, a veteran CNDD-FDD activist said.
Agapapu is a new practice whereby Gen. Neva (other nickname “kirogorogo”) extorts wealth from other big thieves, such as Bunyoni. Kirogorogo or his crooked wife Angeline, gives one a choice: “handover your loot, or go to jail”!
Today President Kirogorogo has another tactic of extortion. He is putting those with “nice” cars on the spot, claiming they are “the cause of fuel shortages.” He wants the population to blame them, thus deflecting blame for Burundi’s problems on the few citizens that still have some private wealth.
While Neva’s Marie Antoinette of a wife, Angeline Ndayishimiye, arrogantly shows off in a custom-made limousine, while clad im super-expensive Gucci dresses and accessories, her husband recently publicly lambasted a businessman who had bought an expensive car.
The prominent businessman, Adrien Ntigacika aka Ziranotse, happens to have been the main money launderer for Pierre Nkurunziza the deceased ruler whom Gen. Neva succeeded. Ziranotse owns a fertilizer plant, hotels, banks, at cetera. But it’s his car that Neva singled him out, to castigate him for. Why?
Because of course it’s a fuel guzzler, something even the simplest peasant can understand. And so, the president of Burundi keeps deflecting blame upon others for his own failures as a ruler.
One can be certain that soon Ziranotse will face an “agapapu” operation, he will either surrender much of his money (and maybe his maybach GLS SUV) to the “first lady” Angeline aka Gucci, or face jail. That will certainly be followed by seizure of his wealth.
Either way Gen. Neva and his greedy thug of a woman will confiscate Ziranotse’s wealth – something wrong, doesn’t matter whether the latter is a terrible crook himself.
It won’t end with Ziranotse however. All those that amassed their wealth fraudulently under Nkurunziza’s rule, “Kula kulipa”, Gen. Neva is coming for their loot.
One thing is certain however. These other “DD” fat cats won’t lay down and quietly surrender.
Expect a battle royal, of DDs!
