This Tuesday was meant to be a day of opportunity for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to address its human rights record before the international community. But when the DRC delegation faced the United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR), the session took a dramatic turn.
Rather than addressing the pressing concerns about human rights in his country, Tshisekedi’s mouthpiece, the DRC’s Minister of Information and government spokesperson Patrick Muyaya painted himself in a corner, when instead he started rambling on about Rwanda! Imagine, everyone knows the record of the Tshisekedi regime, which among other things is executing a campaign of genocide against a section of the DRC population. Everyone knows about the atrocities of the DRC army, the FARDC, and all their looting, raping, massacres of civilians, and other atrocities.
That was what Muyaya was supposed to address. But as usual with these Kinshasa jokers, he chose to try drag Rwanda in the mud.
The audience, mostly of diplomats, was having none of it!
To add to the Congolese delegation’s image of a circus, the delegation supposedly was headed by Chantal Chambu Mwatvita, DRC’s Minister of Human Rights. Only for Patrick Muyaya to take the lead. Unserious is an understatement.
In his allegations, Muyaya once again pushed their tired story of a so-called “Rwandan aggression.”
For the Tshisekedi regime, blaming Rwanda is a get-out-jail card; a convenient diversionary tactic used whenever uncomfortable questions arise about the DRC’s myriad failings.
But in this instance, the move backfired on Muyaya et al, badly.
The council’s vice-president publicly chastised Muyaya, reminding him why their delegation was there: to answer to Congolese violations of human rights, and the crimes involved.
The Rwandan ambassador also took the opportunity to remind Muyaya (and his boss back in Kinshasa) to own their problems, before daring point fingers of accusation at Rwanda.
This isn’t the first time Congolese leaders have tried to drag Rwanda’s name through the mud, on an international stage. Wherever there is any international gathering where “team Ndombolo” is invited, from agriculture, sports, environment conferences, and so on, they (Congolese) are there blabbering about Rwanda.
What a woeful gang!
They better style up, or the Congolese populace will wisen up, and push them out, for an administration that’s serious.
