In Burundi voter card replaces ID card in state scam against populace

As Burundi’s 2025 general elections approach, the dictatorial regime has intensified pressure on citizens, forcing them to register on voting lists.

Under the order of Primitive ruler Evariste Ndayishimiye, the government is taking extreme measures that have removed the lines between voluntary participation and forced compliance.

Reports indicate that a voting card has now become more essential than an ID card or even a driver’s license, as Burundians are being denied access to basic services if they lack voter registration.

In recent weeks they have found themselves in a unique predicament: without a voting registration certificate, they are cut off from everyday essentials. Access to water, healthcare, market services, and even administrative assistance is now contingent upon voter registration. Those who have chosen not to register are reportedly facing intimidation by local police and members of the ruling party’s militia, the Imbonerakure.

In universities, the reach of these restrictions has also been felt, with students being denied entry to campuses unless they can show their voting registration cards at the gate, Burundians see the move as an attempt to manipulate the democratic process and silence dissent.

Burundi’s Constitution and electoral laws outline voting as a right not an obligation. Yet, the enforcement of mandatory voter registration for accessing fundamental rights marks a sharp deviation from the principles of democracy.

The electoral commission claims that over 60 percent of Burundians have already registered. But if this statistic holds true, why the continued pressure?
Such coercive tactics have further fueled speculation that the current administration is attempting to manipulate the electoral process, fraudulently ensure Ndayishimiye “victory.”

With every new measure, the discontent with government among Burundians reaches new heights. Many have expressed frustration with what they perceive as a dictatorship in disguise.

The sense of distrust with the “DD goons” is sky high, as the regime continues to crack down on those who oppose or criticize its policies.

There is nothing remotely “democratic” about the way Ndayishimiye and his “DD” gang are going about preparing for their sham election.
