MONUSCO, the UN’s supposed peacekeeping mission in DRC has for long sided with Tshisekedi in his unjust, brutal war against the Congolese March 23 Movement (M23).
Today, their (Monusco) drones were in the air, aiding the Tshisekedi regime already condemned for genocide and crimes against humanity. Just hours ago, Tshisekedi’s coalition forces rampaged through Karongi Kwa Koki, stealing over 50 cows and killing two herders.
Since its inception in 1999, MONUSCO has not only failed to protect civilians but has also essentially surrendered its mandate. Instead of being a stabilizing force, the Blue Helmets have become the enablers of the very regime they were supposed to hold accountable. By aligning themselves with the FARDC, the Congolese army, they’ve turned a blind eye to the reality that this army is often the catalyst for chaos rather than its cure.
No wonder why, decades later, the UN mission’s declared objective—civilian protection—remains an utter failure.
Moreover, while countless UN reports have documented the economic and military ties between the DRC army and the genocidal FDLR (offshoot of the notorious ex-FAR and Interahamwe militias responsible for the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi), Monusco turns a blind eye to this. Instead of dismantling these armed gangs, they instead prop them up (in cahoots with Tshisekedi).
All the while, they willfully disregard the diplomatic paths championed by African states, such as the Nairobi and Luanda processes.
In a nutshell, over a jaw-dropping US$ 20 billion has been squandered on Monusco’s deployment.
Their 2018 budget alone consumed 20 percent of the Congolese state’s entire budget that year. And what do they have to show for this colossal expenditure? Absolutely nothing.
They aren’t even better than nothing, they are an enormous part of the problem.
