The world should take note of Rwanda’s exemplary model in Mozambique that brought about peace and prosperity

In July 2021, at the request of the government of Mozambique, Rwanda deployed their security forces both the army and police to restore peace and security and facilitate the displaced people’s safe return to their homes. Two years and almost a half, Rwanda’s security forces have showcased remarkable dedication and success. Their commendable efforts are truly making a positive impact and setting an excellent example.

To start with, Rwandan forces have restored peace and security in Mozambique. In only a month, after the deployment, the forces secured Mocimboa da Praia — a port city that had been a stronghold of terrorists since 2015. This was a blow to the terrorists who had killed more than 4000 people and displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians. Therefore, the capture of the city allowed the government to exploit the sea and the airport located in the city.

In the same short spell, Rwandan forces killed scores of Islamic State-linked terrorist group including their prominent leaders. In August 2021, a joint operation of Rwandan forces, Mozambican forces and SADC forces carried out and killed Bonomade Machude Omar, also known as Ibn Omar, along with other senior members of the terrorist group.

Beyond quelling terrorism, Rwanda’s security forces resettled more than 250.000 internally displaced persons who were displaced by terrorists. Some of the people who returned home have resumed their economic activities. And Rwandan forces have supported their journey with a fish market. This one was built as an initiative to address the human security issues that were caused by the terrorists’ insurgency.

The commitment of Rwanda’s security forces was extended to conducting a medical outreach program in Cabo Delgado. First off, Rwanda established a well-equipped level 2 referral hospital in their base camp. This had a purpose to offer medical services to people around the Rwandan forces’ base. Having in mind that there are some other people who have to frequently travel through the forest to get treatment, Rwandan medical teams have made it possible to reach people in their region and treat them freely. Now, Rwandan security forces have treated more than 1600 people in Cabo Delgado.

Rwanda knows that they will not stay in Mozambique forever. Thus, Rwanda’s security forces have started to build the capacity of the Mozambique Armed Defence Forces. Brigadier General Ronald Rwivanga, Rwandan Defence Force spokesperson, has told the media that Rwanda is doing security sector reform in Mozambique.
“Rwanda will support the Mozambican forces in reforming the security sector to ensure that when Rwandan forces leave, they will be able to stand on their own and maintain their security status,” said Brigadier General Ronald Rwivanga.

In summary, the efforts of Rwanda’s security forces in Mozambique are nothing short of extraordinary. As Rwanda continues to write this chapter of positive change, the world should take note of their exemplary model for addressing complex challenges and fostering a future where peace and prosperity prevail.
