The DRC is being ruled by Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, a confused, and narcissistic leader who literally exercises zero reason in what he does. This is why on May 4, 2023, he officially recognized violent armed groups operating in North Kivu as part of his coalition forces. Known as Wazalendo, these are violent armed groups, largely created by local Congolese politicians and allies of FARDC, accused by numerous reports of having committed serious abuses against Congolese civilians for years with complete impunity.
Yet Tshilombo, not only turns a blind eye to these atrocities but endorses them by integrating these armed groups into the regular army in order to hunt Congolese Rwandaphones civilians, who, according to Tshisekedi’s propaganda machine, are conveniently scapegoated as threats to the stability of the DRC.
Wazalendo’s objectives revolve around fighting the M23 rebels, unleashing violence against Congolese Tutsi communities, and instigating a regional conflict by launching attacks on Rwanda and Uganda. It goes without saying that in the event of such a war, the Congolese populace would bear the brunt, as they did in 1996–1997 and the subsequent 1998–2004 Congo wars. Unfortunately, Tshilombo appears unconcerned about the plight of the Congolese people, as seen in his alliances with the tropical Nazi from FDLR, local militias, and mercenaries from various backgrounds, all of whom are known for systematically committing mass crimes against civilians.
Tshilombo must be prepared to face international tribunals for the atrocities committed by the Wazalendo in the Kivu provinces and any potential attacks against neighboring countries. Instead of combating the rebels led by Bertrand Bisimwa and Sultani Makenga – the former being the president of the M23 movement, and the latter commanding its military branch, the ARC – who are advocating for the implementation of the December 2013 agreements in Nairobi, Tshisekedi’s Wazalendo are ruthlessly targeting innocent Congolese Rwandaphones.
Furthermore, Tshisekedi’s ill-conceived strategy has started to backfire, with the very Wazalendo forces he armed now turning their weapons against his own regular army (FARDC). A recent Médecins sans Frontières report has documented the fallout, revealing that over 70 Congolese civilians have died in clashes that pit various pro-Tshisekedi armed groups against the very forces they were meant to reinforce. From the outset, supplying weaponry to these armed groups resembled pouring gasoline on an already smoldering fire.
In essence, it takes a certain level of gullibility to buy into Tshilombo’s delusional plan of arming bloodthirsty militias as a solution to end the violence they perpetrate against innocent civilians. The facts are thus acquired: Tshisekedi stands as the chief architect of insecurity in the DRC. His reign spells nothing but disaster for the people of eastern DRC, who live in constant fear as their loved ones fall victim to the ongoing senseless and utterly futile war being perpetuated by Tshisekedi.
