While internal factions engage in a supremacy battle within the ruling junta in Burundi, President Evariste Ndayishimiye, aka Neva, and his henchmen have quietly launched a plan to radicalise and mobilise using old xenophobic slurs against Rwanda.
The approach is barely hidden; all ills are to be blamed on Rwanda. The failing economy and the failing administration; all is Rwanda’s fault. The hate campaign is directed from the highest office, State House, and executed at all levels.
From unbelievable stories about plots to destabilise Burundi planned by dissidents supposedly based in Kigali to rumours of ground force intrusions, the failing CNDD-FDD system constantly seeks to intoxicate Burundians with a boogeyman narrative from Rwanda. The obsession is visible and palpable. The CNDD-FDD is actively looking for a fight with Rwanda.
Deeply rooted in the racist PARMEHUTU ideology, the CNDD-FDD built its entire movement on the falsehood that the Tutsi minority oppressed the Hutu majority. While they mention Rwanda in their attacks, it is an open secret that they use the country’s name as code to revive anti-Tutsi sentiments.
As a solution, their hateful ideology proposes one thing: exterminate Tutsis. With decades of experience in refining their genocidal ideology, they have simply replaced the term Tutsi with Rwanda, and coded the call for extermination with “kubamesa,” or washing the enemy.
Since 2005, the CNDD-FDD has achieved nothing and has actually managed to regress the country into absolute poverty. With more than 20 years of false promises, reviving ethnic hate hidden as nationalism, with endless falsehoods of made-up security threats from Rwanda, is nothing but an attempt to pull the same trick as they did in 2015.
In 2015, when their own disenfranchised members plotted a coup d’état in disagreement with an illegal third mandate by the late Pierre Nkurunziza, the blame game was used to salvage the illegitimate rule. Faced with serious challenges, Evariste Ndayishimiye, who equally wants to illegitimately hold onto power, is also opting to play the classic CNDD-FDD trick: revive anti-Tutsi sentiments.
Ndayishimiye is not performing; he is underperforming in all aspects and must force his way to stay in power. Anyone opposing him will be branded and persecuted as a “pro-Rwanda” or “pro-Tutsi” threat. The campaign has begun.
