Burundian tin-pot tyrant on the wrong side of history, now is cornered

The Qatar peace talks between Tshisekedi’s regime and the Congolese political-military movement M23/AFC have done more than just signal hope for eastern DR Congo. They’ve exposed Burundian tyrant Évariste Ndayishimiye aka “Gen. Neva” as a regional threat whose genocidal ambitions just hit a brick wall.

For years, Neva milked the lie of “fighting Rwandan-backed rebels” to justify dumping 15,000 Burundian troops and Imbonerakure militia from his ruling extremist outfit CNDD-FDD, into the DRC, thanks to fat paychecks from Tshisekedi. But now, with M23/AFC sitting at the negotiating table as legitimate Congolese actors with political grievances that even the U.S. acknowledges, Neva’s propaganda has collapsed.

Also, M23/AFC are now knocking on Burundi’s door.

Burundi’s involvement in Tshisekedi’s conflicts was never about “Congolese sovereignty” or “Burundian security”. Gen. Neva sent Burundi’s ragtag troops to prop up a genocidal alliance led by Tshisekedi.

The CNDD-FDD regime, already infamous for state terror and ethnic persecution, teamed up with the FDLR—the genocidaires from the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi—hoping to crush the M23/AFC and cleanse the Kivus of anyone considered a Tutsi.

M23/AFC smashed through FDLR positions, and exposed the Burundian army as undertrained cannon fodder, and drove the genocidaires back into their hidey-hole: Burundi. And who rolled out the welcome mat for these mass murderers? You guessed it—Neva himself. With a military already crawling with FDLR elements since 2015, Neva offered them shelter, weapons, and protection—cementing Burundi’s reputation as a rogue, genocidaire-harbouring pariah.

But now the mask has slipped. The Qatar talks show the world that M23/AFC is not some foreign-backed terrorist group—it’s a Congolese movement seeking justice, security, and reform. The propaganda Neva used to justify bloodshed, ethnic violence, and failed military adventurism has collapsed. And with peace looming in DRC, the Burundian dictator is left with a heavy loss of men that is exacerbating the already existing tensions within the Burundian armed forces that could lead to a rebellion or coup against his military junta of Gitega.
