Evariste Ndayishimiye’s “Soldiers-for-Hire” scam collapsing in DR Congo

In the inner circles of the CNDD-FDD junta that rules Burundi, Evariste Ndayishimiye aka Gen. Neva made several promises to secure the presidency. He scammed his way to power promising to be a “gentle”puppet president in the footsteps of the late Pierre Nkurunziza, and promised miraculous economic development. He lied. Of course.

Gen. Neva’s first order of business was to break the deceased Nkurunziza’s inner circle. He quickly blamed his predecessor’s regime for all economic problems, and jailed the “inherited” Prime Minister Bunyoni.

In meetings of the ruling CNDD-FDD, Gen. Neva claimed Bunyoni had been deliberately sabotaging the economy, and promised “economic prosperity and recovery” as a result of Bunyoni’s arrest. It was all a scam. The only thing the greedy Gen. Neva wanted was to purge all Nkurunziza’s people. He also wanted to take over their wealth (Bunyoni had embezzled his way to a multi-million dollar fortune, which Gen. Neva and his thieving wife quickly looted.

Next up were the cartels that had grown under Nkurunziza. Again Gen. Neva purged them, but instead of “nationalizing” their ill-gotten wealth, the new ruler and his thieving wife looted them too. And so, the economy sunk deeper into chaos. There was none of the promised “economic recovery.”

Next, President Evaristo Ndayishimiye aka Gen. Neva and his corrupt, thieving, money hungry wife brutally took over the fuel supply business. Any supplier that tried to resist their shake- down methods quickly found themselves arrested, with brute violence, and taken to the Mpimba jail, on cooked up charges.

That’s Burundi’s first family for you.

They weren’t done, no sir!

Next they targeted the underground forex trade, and all other cash-cows left by Nkurunziza and Bunyoni. “The weight of corruption and all kinds of criminality in high office has tripled since Ndayishimiye took over,” one elderly Burundian gentleman lamented.

But there were consequences. First, most obviously the paltry little economy of Burundi tanked. Fuel disappeared, making matters incrementally worse. Sugar disappeared. Medical supplies became history in Burundi. Hardships after hardship has piled upon the citizens of this world’s poorest country during Gen. Neva’s rule.

Still, even faced with the worsening economy and growing discontent within CNDD-FDD, Neva pushed another scam. He invented a threat to their one party rule, to justify military intervention in DRC Congo.

Ndayishimiye aka Gen. Neva offered the Burundian army, for hire to the Kinshasa regime. He was thirsty for Tshisekedi’s dollars. (Sharing a genocide ideology with Tshisekedi was the icing on the cake).

Privately, Gen. Neva approached Tshisekedi and offered a quote: US$ 5000 per soldier and you can have as many soldiers as you want!” The greedy DD boss was literally selling young Burundians to die in a war that doesn’t concern them.

But this “soldiers for hire” scam is presenting an unexpected problem for the Bujumbura mob boss. Fighters of the M23 movement – which Tshisekedi was paying Gen. Neva to offer his soldiers to “hunt down” – have been killing the Burundian troops like flies.

Grief and despair are palpable in military camps all over the country.

“We are talking hundreds dead per month. We are now labelling the dead as deserters to avoid constant morners in Camps”, some senior soldiers have been heard murmuring, “but it is very clear that we are in Congo because of his (Gen. Neva) gluttony”.

It can’t end well for that clown of a ruler.

Privately, some CNDD-FDD officials are already calling his acts treason, but they fear he might have powerful treacherous allies.

But at some point, the fear will end.
