South Kivu, where Ndayishimiye’s greed meets Tshisekedi’s fear

A patriot of his own stomach, Burundian tyrant Evariste Ndayishimiye aka Gen. Neva continues to send Burundian soldiers into South Kivu, DRC, to fight and die in a meaningless war. Being sent to die in service of Gen. Neva’s stomach!

Recent eyewitnesses confirmed that at least 30 trucks loaded with Burundian troops and Imbonerakure militia crossed the border into South Kivu, adding to more than 15,000 troops already deployed in the Congolian quagmire since August 2023.

This reckless military adventurism is about fueling chaos. Together with his ally Congolese ruler Felix Tshisekedi, Evariste Ndayishimiye has chosen to target the Banyamulenge community (the Congolese Tutsi) of South Kivu while ignoring the urgent global calls for a ceasefire and lasting peace.

Behind this campaign lies Tshisekedi’s fear that Uvira, like other towns, could soon fall under the control of the M23 movement. Instead of pursuing dialogue, he hides behind proxies. At the second Joint Oversight Committee (JOC) meeting held on September 3, Tshisekedi was criticized for dragging his feet on implementing the peace agreement. His answer is never peace but more war. And Burundi is his important proxy.

Burundi itself has now become a haven and training ground for the FDLR, a militia born out of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Burundian troops and the Imbonerakure fight side by side with FDLR units in South Kivu. Even more alarming, some Imbonerakure are being trained directly by the FDLR, cementing this unholy alliance.

Greed is why Ndayishimiye persists in this destructive path. For every Burundian soldier sent to fight in Congo, Tshisekedi pays $5,000 per month. Yet these soldiers, who risk their lives on foreign soil, receive only $70 if junior and $100 if officers. The rest disappears into the pockets of Ndayishimiye.

What is clear to the naked eye is that Ndayishimiye and Tshisekedi have turned Burundi into an exporter of instability at the very moment when the world is calling for peace.

His greed has reduced Burundians to martyrs of a senseless war that serves no national interest; only his personal ambition and Tshisekedi’s survival.
