The father of a young lieutenant in the army who was Killed by the brutal CNDD-FDD regime,
had shared the last passionate letter (sent as a WhatsApp message) of the fallen soldier.
Lieutenant X [name withheld to protect his family] wrote a series of messages to Evariste Ndayishimiye, pleading with the tyrant to withdraw troops from DRC Congo. His argument was simple: why are young Burundians dying in Congo while Congolese seem unbothered?
“There are over 100 million Congolese and barely 14 million Burundians. It should be Congolese dying for their country not Burundians,” the young lieutenant passionately wrote as he exposed the hardships his unit faces in Congo.
“As an officer, I swore to protect Burundi not Congo, but senior officers are using us like miners and gang members to loot under their command,” he charged.
The Lieutenant wrote to a WhatsApp number that Evariste Ndayishimiye publicly gave, claiming it to be his personal contact number. Aware that the line was monitored and that his deployment was a result of a commercial transaction between Tshisekedi and Ndayishimiye, the heroic young officer knew very well what might follow.
“I know SNR [Burundian Intelligence] will arrest me and torture me for what I have just written. I know Congo is paying a lot of money for us to be here. But I am not a mercenary!” He concluded.
The response was swift. The officer was summoned to Bujumbura, and killed. His family was told that their son died in a car accident, but torture marks were visible on his lifeless body.
Hailing from a pro CNDD-FDD family did not help either. His family was warned directly by party officials. If they publish the letter, they will be labeled as enemies (ibipinga) which is synonymous to a death sentence.
Yet the father decided to leak content of the WhatsApp message.
“My son was brave, and CNDD-FDD cannot become a cash cow of cowards and theives,” the father said as he promised to release the full message and a screenshot.
