Many believed that Congolese ruler Tshisekedi left Qatar as a changed man recently after they met with President Kagame there.
Everyone thought the high-level discussions chaired by the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani would be the turning point for peace in the region. Alas no.
Tshisekedi wasted no time discarding every recommendation and agreement from the Doha meeting, opting instead to persist with his old, deranged antics.
One of the most pressing issues he was expected to address was the presence of the FDLR which continues to pose a big security threat to Rwanda. But rather than tackling the issue, Tshilombo rushed to Western media to spin his usual propaganda and outright lies.
Speaking to Le Figaro, a French media, he downplayed the FDLR’s existence, claiming (this notorious terrorist group) was “merely 750 activists and a very few old genocidaires.”
This statement is blatant misinformation. There are thousands of FDLR militias in DRC, many of them fully integrated in the DRC army, FARDC. They have political representatives in Tshilombo’s very cabinet, and in the parliament.
Tshisekedi’s remarks are part of a strategy to gloss over his regime’s support for this genocidal group – which in fact is his main tool in his campaign of genocide against Congolese Tutsi communities. Tshilombo is the biggest benefactor of FDLR, enabling them to recruit, train, and persist as they plot to bring violent conflict and civil strife back to Rwanda.
Tshilombo fools no one but himself with his claims about the cutthroat militia.
The Doha meeting presented an opportunity for Tshisekedi to initiate dialogue with the Afc-M23, the liberation movement that fights for the rights and the very existence of Congolese Tutsi communities that Tshisekedi has vowed to wipe out.
But rather than embrace diplomacy, Tshilombo instead repeats another of his old lies: that Afc-M23 is “Rwandan”.
How does Tshilombo think his utterances will help the cause of peace? Only he knows.
But one thing is obvious: Tshilombo went to Doha, to waste everyone’s time.
