For years, the Tshisekedi regime has accused Rwanda of attempting to balkanize the DR Congo. However, mounting evidence shows that it is, in fact, Tshisekedi himself who is advancing this project of “balkanization”.
It started when this warmonger Tshisekedi decided to prevent a section of the population in eastern DRC from voting. His regime justified it by claiming that the region was insecure. However, this story does not stand scrutiny, as millions of Congolese citizens in the region were effectively stripped of their right to participate in the democratic process.
Today, North and South Kivu boast a population of over 15 million people. Under the pretext of being occupied by M23, the Tshisekedi regime has effectively treated these provinces as foreign territories, even urging neighboring countries to do the same.
Tshisekedi’s policies have further deepened the economic and social suffering of the region. Recently, his administration enacted measures that treat goods coming from Goma and Bukavu as if they were foreign imports, imposing additional import duties. This move effectively isolates the region from the rest of the country, making basic goods and services increasingly inaccessible to the local population.
Additionally, Kinshasa has rejected exports originating from areas under M23 control, instructing other countries not to consider them as Congolese products. Banks in the region have also been blocked from operating freely, creating an economic stranglehold on millions of Congolese citizens.
Beyond economic measures, Tshisekedi’s regime also continues its ethnic tensions. Swahili speakers, the majority of whom come from eastern DRC, are targeted, hunted, and persecuted across the country, particularly in Kinshasa. This discrimination further alienates the eastern population, reinforcing the perception that they are not fully accepted as part of the Congolese nation.
By treating M23-controlled areas as foreign land, Tshisekedi is indirectly legitimizing their separation from the DRC. As his criminal regime continues to isolate and marginalize eastern DRC, it may leave M23 and other groups with no choice but to consolidate power and declare independence. If this trajectory continues, the Kivus could be pushed toward secession, creating yet another divided nation in the heart of Africa.
Rather than promoting unity and stability, Tshisekedi’s policies appear to be accelerating the fragmentation of the DRC.
