Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, the ruler of what can only be described as a tropical fascist regime in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), continues his reckless charade, spouting the claim of external forces conspiring to Balkanize his nation. It’s a deviant narrative for Tshisekedi’s chaotic and utterly irresponsible governance to which the ongoing civil war in the east is the consequence. This isn’t a novel strategy; it’s a worn-out page from the playbook of Mobutu Sese Seko Kuku Ngbendu Wa Za Banga, the notorious colonial sergeant-turned-despot, who excelled at deflecting blame for his own rampant looting. Tshisekedi, in a similar vein, uses this narrative to hide the root causes of the DRC’s turmoil, ensuring that solutions remain as elusive as ever, perpetuating insecurity in the DRC and in the Great Lakes region.
For a start, Tshisekedi’s rule is the epitome of the very Balkanization he publicly condemns. His regime is marked by a patronage system that diverts the country’s natural wealth and state assets to a circle of cronies, all while the Congolese masses languish in poverty. Tshisekedi masks these actions by fostering tribal animosity, ethnic divisions, and xenophobic sentiments directed at Congolese Rwandaphones. These policies lie at the heart of the ongoing crisis in the DRC while simultaneously serving as a smokescreen, diverting attention away from other underlying causes. These include the presence of over 266 armed groups that terrorize the population in collusion with local politicians and army officers (FARDC), engaging in resource trafficking and violence against civilians, often targeting them based on their ethnic identities, with Congolese Rwandaphones, particularly Tutsis being the daily victims.
Tshisekedi’s reign has witnessed the Balkanization of the DRC through the imposition of tribalistic rule and the indulgence of ethnicist tendencies, all to mask his own political ineptitude. His tenure, devoid of tangible achievements in the form of infrastructure, healthcare, education, or community-building, has pushed ethnic hatred to unprecedented heights, where patriotism has devolved into a call for bloodshed. In his four-year tenure, Tshisekedi’s sole “accomplishment” lies in fostering a climate of anti-Rwandese and anti-Tutsi animosity, a cynical tool for manipulating and demagoguing the Congolese population.
Tshisekedi’s divisive tactics have succeeded in fracturing the Congolese people to the extent that cannibalization is trending. It is these policies of tribal enmity and civilian brutality, orchestrated by Tshisekedi himself, that have become the defining elements of a real and systemic Balkanization. They remain the core and unaddressed drivers of the ongoing crisis, of which today’s civil war between Tshisekedi’s coalition forces and the M23 Congolese political and military movement is the expression.
Finally, the Congolese populace, fueled by Tshisekedi’s propaganda, is asking for arms from the Kinshasa regime to “take the war to Kigali” in a bid to counteract a perceived phantom Balkanization. This “Balkanization” propaganda has been elevated to an Orwellian state-sanctioned truth, overshadowing and suppressing the real facts. This amounts to nothing but psychological terrorism against innocent Congolese.
