In his latest literary endeavor, “Holocauste au Congo”, Charles Onana brazenly disregards the tenets of historical accuracy and intellectual honesty. By selectively omitting essential elements of the widely accepted markers of genocide and ethnic cleansing. Onana deftly fabricates a narrative that directly contradicts the verifiable historical record. It is ironic, to say the least, that Onana, an unwavering advocate of the Hutu Power Regime (that orchestrated the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi), would aim to deny the existence of what clearly constitutes genocide.
Despite this, it is clear that Onana’s revisionist claims do not hold up to scrutiny. He fails to ask the fundamental questions that would challenge his views. For instance, why did the post-genocide Rwandan government, supposedly intent on committing another genocide against the so-called Hutu refugees, go to such great lengths to reconcile with the “Hutu population” already present in Rwanda after the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi? Onana’s lack of consideration for this crucial context reveals the frailty of his arguments and the hollowness of his revisionist claims.
Moreover, Onana conveniently disregards the vital context surrounding the Rwandan military’s intervention in the former Zaire, specifically the grave threat posed by ex-FAR and genocidal militias hiding in the refugee camps and planning to launch another round of anti-Tutsi violence in Rwanda. The United Nations’ inability to address this security challenge necessitated a robust response, which Onana fails to acknowledge. To suggest otherwise is to willfully distort the historical record and misrepresent the gravity of the situation.
Finally, Onana overlooks the fact that none of the responsible leaders of the genocide against Tutsi present in the refugee camps in Zaire have been arrested in accordance with Article VI of the UN Security Council Prevention and Repression of Genocide Convention. These fundamental questions must be addressed by Onana and other revisionists if they wish to contribute to an honest and accurate understanding of the events that followed the arrival of Hutu Power brigades and militias in the Eastern part of the then Zaire. Until then, their claims remain nothing more than revisionist propaganda, devoid of historical truth or intellectual substance.
