RNC mouthpiece David Himbara’s delusion, that Rwanda, a country that respects the Refugee Convention’s raison d’etre by providing the greatest possible protection to refugees, is “always looking out for ways of cashing in on even the most tragic human experience”. His claim is false and immune to all facts.
Rwanda has been welcoming refugees for over two decades; it clearly demonstrated a genuine humanitarian commitment to the refugee cause. It also happens to be the only country that stepped in to offer refuge to stranded asylum seekers in Libya that had been turned into modern day slaves. As of 31 January 2020, there are 150,574 refugees individually registered with UNHCR in Rwanda. The country offers protection services and life-saving assistance including food, water, medical care, psychosocial support, and accommodation. Uniquely in Africa, Rwanda recognizes urban refugee rights and enrolls people in the Mutuelle de Santé (national health coverage). Rwanda also officially grants all asylum seekers social and economic rights, including the right to work.
Rather than disputing outstanding achievements with facts and logic, Himbara resorts to his usual cheap propaganda and hearsay.
More potent yet, while referring to a memorandum of understanding (MoU) regarding cooperation on asylum and migration issues between Rwanda and Denmark signed on April 24, Himbara omits even the most basic point that a memorandum of understanding is not legally binding. It is simply a framework for future negotiations and cooperation between the Rwanda and Denmark. Moreover, no asylum seeker transfer is discussed anywhere in the MoU.
The other blatant falsehood is that most of the asylum seekers in Rwanda end up sneaking into Uganda and other neighboring countries. The terrorist propagandist is clearly trying to assist his sponsor caught inflating refugee numbers to swindle donors. Himbara’s readers should be reminded that he is a dishonest drug addict, who regularly gets himself involved in organizing falsehoods in asylum claims and even in cases in court where he tries to defend Genocide convicts by committing perjury.
